Patient Information

Understanding Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the soft tissues of the throat collapse during sleep, repeatedly blocking the airway. Each pause in breathing — called an apnea — can last from a few seconds to over a minute and may happen dozens or even hundreds of times per night.

What Causes It

The muscles that support the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, and tongue relax during sleep. In OSA, this relaxation causes the airway to narrow or close completely, cutting off airflow and forcing the brain to briefly wake the body to reopen it.

Why It Matters

Left untreated, OSA is associated with serious health risks — high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and chronic daytime fatigue. Many patients don't realize how much their sleep quality has deteriorated until they begin treatment.

How We Help

Dr. Smith works with board-certified sleep physicians to confirm your diagnosis through a sleep study before recommending treatment. This coordinated approach ensures you receive the right care — oral appliance therapy is effective across all severities of obstructive sleep apnea and is tailored to each patient's anatomy and needs.

Oral Appliance Therapy

A custom oral appliance is a small, comfortable device worn during sleep that gently repositions the lower jaw and tongue to keep the airway open. There are no masks, no hoses, and no machine noise — just a discreet, travel-friendly appliance that fits like a sports mouthguard. Dr. Smith takes precise impressions to ensure your appliance fits comfortably and works effectively from the very first night.

Highlights

  • Custom-fitted for maximum comfort
  • Compact and travel-friendly
  • Effective for all severities of obstructive sleep apnea
  • Non-invasive and easy to use consistently
  • Quiet and discreet — no machine required

Snoring Treatment

Chronic snoring is more than a nuisance — it can be a sign of a partially obstructed airway and may indicate underlying sleep apnea. Even when sleep apnea is not present, loud snoring disrupts sleep for both you and your partner. An oral appliance can significantly reduce or eliminate snoring by keeping the airway open throughout the night. For patients with primary snoring — snoring without sleep apnea — we also offer QuietNite laser treatment at our McKinney location.

Highlights

  • Reduces or eliminates chronic snoring
  • Improves sleep quality for you and your partner
  • Non-invasive oral appliance option
  • Screening available for underlying sleep apnea
  • QuietNite laser available for primary snoring (McKinney only)

QuietNite Laser Treatment for Primary Snoring

For patients whose snoring is not caused by obstructive sleep apnea — known as primary snoring — we offer QuietNite laser treatment at our McKinney office. This non-invasive, in-office laser procedure gently tightens the soft tissues of the palate and throat, reducing the vibration that causes snoring. There are no incisions, no anesthesia, and no downtime.

QuietNite is a comfortable, quick treatment that many patients find effective after just a few sessions. If you or your partner has been losing sleep over chronic snoring and sleep apnea has been ruled out, this may be the solution you have been looking for.
